New Entrepreneurship Project!!!!!

Last week students were introduced to the concept of anthologies. Anthologies are not limited to collections of writings, but art and music as well. Students perused one very popular anthology/book series: Chicken Soup for the Soul. These books will serve as a template for their next entrepreneurial endeavor- An anthology chronicling the experiences of 6th grade! Our goal is to allow students the opportunity to reflect on their experiences this year, while offering advice, encouragement and anecdotes for parents and incoming 6th graders. This project will fuse Job Club and Self-Expression; allowing young people to express themselves in various mediums, while developing a business.

This week students are selecting the following:
1. Anthology Names
2. Categories/ Chapters
3. Company Names

Additionally, we will begin planning for a culminating spring themed event, to take place at the end of the school year. This event will feature theatrical productions, games, activities and food for the ACMS community.

B.O.N.D Community Credit Union will be at ACMS next Wednesday, March 18, 2009. Many students have not returned their bank forms, leaving stipends to remain un-deposited. We need parent support to ensure that each and every student has a completed credit union account form. I would like to congratulate the 6th graders for a job well done. You all should be very proud of your commitment to hard work, creativity and excellence! A special thank you to the following students:

This week students will explore the concept of Market Research. Market Research is the process of finding out what people in your community need, where and when they need it, and how much they are willing to pay for it. This concept will be fused with our class session/entrepreneurial project- an anthology of poems, artwork and writings by ACMS 6th graders about the transition from elementary to middle school. Our goal is to allow the students to reflect on their experiences this year, while offering advice, encouragement and anecdotes for parents and incoming 6th graders. Carrera Night- This Wednesday!!!!!

In continued preparation for our BIG event, students are finishing up wire sculptures that will be on display as part of Self Expression component. Inspired by imagination, hobbies and scenes from everyday living; students have created sculptures that challenge traditional design and our own imaginations.

Additionally, students will continue to put finishing touches on games, skits and visual displays for the evening that showcase the work they are doing in Job Club component. I am so excited to see them take ownership of their presentations and the creative process.

I would like to extend a HUGE thank you to the 6th grade. Coming back to school and receiving those beautiful cards and well-wishes absolutely made my day! Words cannot express how touched and appreciative I was to get them. I truly needed that, so thank you all again.

Presentations are underway this week for the final leg of the Nike Business Challenge. Each group will be asked a series of questions regarding their product, production and retail cost selection, celebrity endorsement, and ad layout. The group with the most cohesive and creative ad layout will win the challenge and receive bonuses for their Savings Accounts!

Additionally, the new 6 week rotation begins for Young Entrepreneurs Club. Our efforts will focus on Carrera Night preparation and Valentine’s Day entrepreneurial projects.

Your department works for Nike, Inc and must design, produce and sell the next line of athletic shoes Nike will launch.

Your goal is to make a profit. Profit is positive increase from an investment after subtracting for all expenses. Your investment from Nike is $1,000.

Your expenses are marketing cost and shoe production cost. Those prices will vary from team to team, depending on how you choose to spend your investment money.

The team with the best design, marketing plan and profit will win the business challenge!

Step 1: Team Leadership

1. Department Manager: Manager will make final decision on production cost and shoe type.
2. Marketing Manager: Marketing Manager will make final decision on celebrity endorsement, marketing strategy and shoe name.
3. Designer: Designer will make final decision on shoe design, colors, etc. Designer will also design actual shoe that appears in retail stores.

The Young Entrepreneurs earned $644.00 that evening and donated 25% to ACMS. The remaining money will be deposited into the bank accounts of the Wednesday club members.

This week students will be quizzed on vocabulary, concepts, and balancing bank account registers from Student Flyer 1 & 2. Vocabulary words that will appear on the quiz are as follows:

We are in need of parent volunteers that evening, as well as donations that are listed on the previous blog. Fall Festival Wish List

Dear Job Club Family,

Job Club and the Young Entrepreneurs are pleased to announce our first entrepreneurial project: Fall Festival! Fall Festival is the brainchild of your young entrepreneur, to be held Friday, October 24, 2008, from 5-7pm, at ACMS. This is an event planning business, where the Young Entrepreneurs will host an evening of fun, food and exciting contests for the entire ACMS family. Tickets are 10 for $5.00. There will be no admission fee to attend the Fall Festival, but all activities, food items and contests require tickets. Profits from Fall Festival will be divided equally amongst members of Job Club, with 25% of profits going to ACMS!

During our logistics meeting, students compiled a Wish List of supplies needed for each station or activity during the Fall Festival. GCAPP-Carerra will invest the remaining “start-up capital” and purchase items not offset by the Wish List.

Tuesday, Thursday Job Club- This week students are introduced to Job Club Enterprises! Job Club Enterprises consists of the following:
1. Job Club Store- Students will rotate store manager positions, with store hours during the last 10 minutes of class. There will be 3 store managers at a time, giving each employee (student) the opportunity to hold that position
2. Job Club Bucks- In addition to the stipend employees receive, they will have the opportunity to earn Job Club Bucks that are redeemable only at the Job Club Store. Bucks can be earned for class participation, taking on job assignments, displaying leadership qualities and abiding by the “Standards and Expectations for the Workplace.”
3. Employee Handbook- Each employee will receive a handbook, outlining company policies and procedures in an effort to foster a safe and healthy work environment. Signed copies (employee and parent) are due next week.
4. Management Positions- All positions will rotate.
a. Human Resource Manager- keeps track of employee time sheets and distributes employee benefits (Job Club Bucks) as directed by Supervisor.
b. Communications Manager- distributes all handouts, quizzes, etc… Ensures all departments have proper supplies (pens and pencils on tables)
c. Store Managers- maintain inventory records, provide outstanding customer service and manage customer transactions.

Test on Student Flyer One & Two- Vocabulary and Concepts

Every student received a folder to keep track of their assignments at the beginning of the semester. Student Flyer One and Two can be found in the folders, along with a Review Sheet. The test will consist of the following:

Bank Account Register- students will be given transaction descriptions that must be recorded in the proper column (withdrawal/deposit), with balances updated after each transaction.
